"More lost than the moon in winter." The subject of this article has been removed from Overwatch. |

Sudden Death occurs when certain Competitive Play matches are tied. On a standard attack-vs-defense map, a coin toss will determine which team does what. The Sudden Death will be played as a single, abbreviated round: if the attackers are able to capture the objective, they win; otherwise, the defenders will win.
Starting with Season 2, Sudden Death was removed from standard Competitive Play. If both teams cannot fill the capture bar at least 33% during their attacking round, the game will simply end as a draw. In a draw result, every player will receive 5, and any players completing their placement matches will receive a yellow "draw" marker on their record.
Sudden Death was still seen after it's removal from Competitive Play in Competitive CTF, which resolved stalemates by placing both capture zones much closer to the center of the map and requiring only a single capture to determine victory.
Prior to being phased out, Sudden Death would have the following requirements for the attacker side:
- Capture the first control point on Assault and Hybrid maps:
- Hanamura in 1 minute and 35 seconds.
- Temple of Anubis in 1 minute and 30 seconds.
- Volskaya Industries in 1 minute and 35 seconds.
- King's Row in 1 minute and 30 seconds.
- Numbani in 1 minute and 50 seconds.
- Hollywood in 1 minute and 45 seconds.
- Push to a checkpoint in Payload maps:
- The first checkpoint on Route 66 in 1 minute and 35 seconds.
- The first checkpoint on Dorado in 1 minute and 30 seconds.
- The second checkpoint on Watchpoint: Gibraltar in 1 minute and 35 seconds.
