We're all soldiers now.

Soldier: 76 is one of the heroes in Overwatch. He is a vigilante who aims to bring the enemies who brought down his former organization to the light of justice.

Armed with cutting-edge weaponry, including an experimental pulse rifle that’s capable of firing spirals of high-powered Helix Rockets, Soldier: 76 has the speed and support know-how of a highly trained soldier.

Bio[]

Currently the target of an international manhunt, the vigilante known as Soldier: 76 wages a personal war to expose the truth behind Overwatch's collapse.

Soldier: 76 revealed himself in a string of attacks that crisscrossed the globe, targeting financial institutions, shadowy corporations, and secure Overwatch facilities. Though to the outside world his motives are inscrutable, there are those who claim that he is a former Overwatch agent, determined to shed light on the conspiracy that brought down the organization.

While his true identity remains a mystery, he is believed to have been trained as a member of the American "soldier enhancement program." He possesses physical capabilities exceeding those of a conventional soldier's, as well as other augmentations that make him a peerless combatant. In addition, he utilizes a cutting-edge arsenal, much of it stolen in raids on Overwatch installations.

Unrelenting in his search to find those responsible for Overwatch's fall, Soldier: 76 will stop at nothing to bring them to justice.

Story[]

Morrison

Morrison in his Strike Commander attire.

Jack Morrison was raised in Bloomington, Indiana by a family of farmers. When he was 18, he joined the US military. He later joined the Armed Forces to defend his country in the Omnic Crisis.[4] Jack Morrison then became a subject of the experimental Soldier Enhancement Program. Through the program, he became close friends with Gabriel Reyes. When the Omnic Crisis began and the UN began to assemble Overwatch, the two accepted the offer to join alongside Reinhardt Wilhelm, Torbjörn Lindholm, Ana Amari, and Liao. Though Reyes led the strike team, Morrison was recognized as the team's moral fabric.

When Overwatch successfully put down the crisis, Reyes became head of Blackwatch while Morrison was promoted to Strike Commander. He oversaw Overwatch's rise to prominence, training new agents and leading them in peacekeeping missions. Jack and Ana later led a mission to rescue hostages from Talon. Though the hostages were escorted out, several agents died in the mission, and Ana was left behind. Ana was reported to be killed in that mission later.[5]

Over time, the public lost faith in Overwatch and accused it of negligence, corruption, and human rights abuses. During a United Nations investigation, Morrison was seemingly killed in a conflict with Reyes at the Swiss Headquarters. He was given a grave at the Arlington National Cemetery, though his body was never found.

Morrison survived, and donned a new identity as Soldier: 76, stealing a Heavy Pulse Rifle from Watchpoint: Grand Mesa and wounding several Helix guards in the process. He began a string of attacks across America against financial institutions and former Overwatch bases in an attempt to avenge Overwatch. After that, Soldier: 76 arrived to Dorado to take on the Los Muertos gang. Though they managed to escape, Soldier: 76 did save the life of a young girl named Alejandra.[6]

Soldier: 76 came to Egypt looking for Ana, who was under a disguise and wanted by Talon. He also charged in and attacked a Talon's base. After recognizing a familiar voice in Talon's communication radio, he was attacked by Reaper, the owner of that voice. Reaper revealed himself as Gabriel Reyes and had been still holding a grudge against Jack. Ana came to the rescue and successfully repelled Reaper. After exchanging information, she gave an explanation for her disappearance and offered him her support.[7] Around Christmas time, Morrison could be seen together with Ana, looking at an old photo.[8]

Appearance[]

Soldier: 76 is an middle-aged to elderly, caucasian man of average build. He had blond hair which has turned white, a scar near his right eye. He usually wears a red visor which also covers his mouth, a blue and white jacket with 76 on the back, red gloves, dark grey pants and silver boots, a hulster which houses a pistol.

Personality[]

Soldier: 76 displays a grouchy and serious demeanor, occasionally grumbling about his old age. He doesn't play by the same fighting rules that he used to, according to himself, and insults his opponents by saying they've "got a lot to learn". Ever since the clash at the Swiss Headquarters took place, Soldier: 76 has become obsessed with bringing criminals to justice, usually taking extreme measures to hunt them down. Although he sees no point in bringing back Overwatch to combat the Second Omnic Crisis, he still misses being able to fight alongside them, as revealed by his quotes when in Watchpoint: Gibraltar.

In spite of this behavior, Soldier: 76 is willing to protect the innocent, even at the cost of letting his adversaries get away. A prime example is when he shields Alejandra from the explosion of a grenade rather than immediately chasing after the Los Muertos gang. He also seems to commend his team once in a while, as shown by his positive comparisons of Pharah to her mother in game.

Tips[]

For more detailed tips as well as hero matchups, see Soldier: 76/Strategy.
  • Soldier: 76 is your bread-and-butter FPS character, sporting an all-around set of tools at his disposal: a repeated round weapon, a high damage secondary fire, a way to quickly move around, a way to heal himself and his comrades, and a sweeping Ultimate ability. That makes him a versatile Hero, in offense or defense, acting as a leader, a flanker, a one-shot healer or even a pseudo-sniper if you're positioned higher than your target(s).

Heavy Pulse Rifle

  • Pulse Rifle can fire several shots before it loses its pinpoint accuracy. This can make burst fire useful in mid-to-longer-range engagements, as the weapon "resets" to full precision if the player waits long enough between trigger pulls.

Helix Rockets

  • It's easier to fire Helix Rockets at the ground. Firing at an enemy's feet will launch the enemy airborne, immobilizing them while in midair. This is recommended when attacking faster targets such as Lúcio or Genji.
  • Firing Helix Rockets directly at the enemy does more damage, but requires precise aiming.
  • Account for the travel time of the Helix Rockets. While the splash damage of the rockets can deal damage, it is a very insignificant amount of damage. Just like the method of aiming ahead while sniping, it can also be applied to using this ability.

Sprint

  • Soldier: 76's sprint makes up for his average speed.
  • Sprint can be used to quickly return back to the battle after respawning.
  • Sprinting around the objective and simultaneously shooting can make you tough to damage.

Biotic Field

  • When fighting tanks, it's best to keep your distance. In close-ranged engagements with tanks such as Winston and D.va, it is a good idea to deploy a Biotic Field as it will nullify the damage they deal whilst you attack them. As Biotic Field heals for a significant amount, it can also be used to stall on objectives.
  • In a one-on-one fight, place down the Biotic Field immediately. This will save his life if he's ever hindered, i.e. frozen, stunned, or blinded. This can also make the difference in a fight with an enemy Soldier: 76.
  • On escort missions, the Biotic Field should be placed on top of the payload. When the payload moves, it will carry the Biotic Field along with it, encouraging teammates to stay close.
  • If behind any hero with a shielding ability, and under heavy fire, place a Biotic Field, even if you are at full health. This boosts your team's chance of pulling through hugely, especially if there is a Pharah or Bastion who easily shreds through defenses.

Tactical Visor

  • The Tactical Visor automatically aims his Heavy Pulse Rifle. This gives it several odd properties, most notably that the better players are at aiming the less valuable an ability it is. It is more valuable on console than on PC because it always aims at mouse speeds even if a player is using a controller.
    • When his Tactical Visor is activated, try to prioritize on bringing down low-health heroes (especially healers) and not waste it on tanks.
    • While the Tactical Visor is active, Soldier: 76 reloads almost instantaneously, allowing him to continue firing for the entire duration of the ultimate.
    • The Tactical Visor will automatically aim Helix Rockets for the player, though there may be some difficulty when aiming at a faster target, such as Genji or Lucio since the rockets don't track the target.
  • Tactical Visor is a deadly ultimate against enemies. 1) Soldier 76's DPS is significantly buffed. 2) Normally difficult heroes to bring down like Pharah, Genji, and Tracer are all vulnerable as anyone else. Do not use this ability to bring down one stubborn player, but kill multiple.
  • After or while activating Tactical Visor, immediately place down a Biotic Field. This makes you an extremely durable and a dangerous enemy. Also, if you activate Tactical Visor and Biotic Field simultaneously, you will cancel the ultimate's activation time, meaning you can immediately start using the ability and healing yourself.

Trivia[]

  • Depicted as the "Dad" of Overwatch by fans.
  • Soldier: 76 was announced on July 7, 2015. Before that, he was teased in two tweets from @PlayOverwatch,[9] as well as two in-universe stories: Experimental Weapon Stolen from Watchpoint: Grand Mesa and Fading Glory: On the Trail of Jack Morrison.
  • Soldier: 76 is the playable character in the Tutorial, and is also the chosen hero when accessing the Practice Range for the first time.
  • Soldier: 76's design comes from a concept for an unreleased comic series made by Chris Metzen and Max Velati.[10]
  • Solider: 76's Heavy Pulse Rifle has a display of ammo and Helix Rockets symbol along with normal display at the lower right corner. The Helix Rockets symbol turns yellow after use and will turn back to normal color after cooldown.
  • Soldier: 76's ultimate, Tactical Visor, is essentially an aimbot, which is a well-known cheat/hack in FPS games where it targets enemies automatically, and has always been frowned upon in many games.
Soldier 76 in custom game

An example of the naming of Soldier: 76 in a Custom match.

  • When multiple AI Soldier: 76s are on one team in a Custom Game, the number in his name will count up for each one, i.e. Soldier: 77, Soldier: 78, etc.
  • A 12.8 inches bronze statue of Soldier: 76 is included in the Overwatch Collector's Edition.
  • In the Summer Games, Soldier: 76's signature sport is golf.
  • In Junkenstein's Revenge, Soldier: 76 mentions growing up in Bloomington, a notable city in the state of Indiana.
  • When Soldier: 76 respawns, he may say "This old dog's learned a few tricks." This is a reference to a popular idiom, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks."
  • The Cyborg: 76 skin was revealed by an Overwatch twitter account, along with Zarya, Bastion, and Pharah's Anniversary skins.
  • Soldier: 76 is the only hero that has a number in his name.
  • After Tracer, Soldier: 76 is the second Overwatch hero whose sexuality has been directly addressed. According to Bastet, Soldier: 76 was in a romantic relationship with a man named Vincent. Michael Chu later confirmed in a statement that Soldier: 76 sexually identifies as gay.[11]

Cultural References[]

  • On his Heavy Pulse Rifle, the letters TMFR can be found, likely an allusion to Blizzards TeamFour, the team that began work on Overwatch.
  • While unusable, the pistol in his holster seems to bear a broad resemblance to the LAPD 2019 BLASTER from the Blade Runner film, except it is completely blacked out.
  • The "Daredevil: 76" and "Stunt Rider: 76" skins are a clear homage to stunt performer Evel Knievel. Coincidentally, the year of 1976 is the year of Knievel's last jump.
    • The Daredevil: 76 skin was previously named Spirit Of: 76.
  • The Commando: 76 and Night Ops: 76 skins are based on equipment used by the United States Special Forces during the Vietnam/Cold War era.
    • The heavy pulse rifle with these skins takes several visual cues from the M16/M4 service rifle, notably the birdcage flash suppressor, carry handle, RIS style hand guard, and front sight; the Helix Launcher takes an appearance similar to that of an M203 Grenade Launcher.
    • The futuristic pistol in his holster is replaced with a pistol similar to that of the Colt M1911, a pistol commonly used by the United States Armed Forces since the First World War.
  • The Voice Line "Old soldiers never die, and they don't fade away." is a reference to General Douglas MacArthur's line in his Farewell Letter to Congress speech.
  • The quote "I love the smell of pulse munitions in the morning." is a reference to the famous quote "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" from the movie Apocalypse Now.
  • The quote "Young punks, get off my lawn" might be a reference to the film Gran Torino.
  • The quote "You're The Other One ("I'm the one who does his jobs. I'm thinkin' you're the other one.") might be a reference to The Departed.
  • Soldier: 76's Immortal skin is a reference to the music video of Michael Jackson's Thriller song from 1983.
  • His voice line "Stay Frosty" is a common military phrase. The first use in popular culture was 1972's The New Centurions, and has since found its way into movies, television, and video games.
  • The Voice Line "I'm not your father!" probably refers to the Overwatch fan-base referring to Soldier: 76 as being the "Father" of the Overwatch characters.
