Rio de Janeiro is a huge seaside city in Brazil. It's the home of Lúcio Correia dos Santos, an international celebrity. It is also the location of Estádio das Rãs.

History[]

The city and its favela were hit hard by the financial upheaval following the Omnic Crisis, and had been going through a process of recovery. It was suggested that around the period of post-Overwatch, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro received two offers of new city center development. One from Calado, a local businessman and one from Vishkar Corporation. The mayor turned down Vishkar's offer and choose Calado's instead. That night, the Calado tower was burned down, as a plan from Vishkar's CEO, Sanjay Korpal; its fire and debris from the tower also destroy the neighboring favela. This incident forced the mayor to accept Vishkar's proposal instead.

Lúcio at that time was living in a poor and crowded favela. His people was promised from Vishkar Corporation a better living condition, but instead Vishkar imposed controls on the Rio's residents by applying curfews, enforcing their own justice, and exploiting the populace as a cheap labor force. Lúcio became his people's hero when he stole Vishkar sonic technology and rallied them to action, driving Vishkar out of their neighborhoods after a big uprising.

However, the worst was yet to come for Rio, shortly after Overwatch successfully dealt with the Paris invasion Null Sector began launching multiple attacks around the world for unknown reasons which included attacking Rio de Janerio.
